News release
More housing will be available for Islanders with 16 two-bedroom single family rental homes being developed in Slemon Park to help address its wait list.
The Province has approved financing for Slemon Park Corporation to build the new homes on land that is already fully serviced with water, sewer and roads.
“We have been providing homes in this vibrant neighbourhood of the City of Summerside for over 28 years,” said Slemon Park Corporation president Shawn McCarvill. “We look forward to building 16 new energy-efficient homes for families to enjoy and to help meet some of the housing demand on PEI.”
Currently, more than 700 Islanders live in the 253 homes at Slemon Park that include water, sewer, heat, lawn care, snow removal and maintenance services for all residents.
“Slemon Park has seen remarkable growth over the years and has developed into a community that is very attractive to Islanders. Supporting this project just makes sense. We know there’s a need for more housing in the Summerside area, and we need to help address the issue and support Island families in any way we can.”
– Economic Growth, Tourism and Culture Minister Matthew MacKay
“Housing is critical for raising healthy children and success in education and the workforce,” said Minister of Social Development and Housing, Ernie Hudson. “By increasing the availability of housing for Islanders in the Summerside area, we are working together to build a stronger, more vibrant community.”
It is anticipated that project will be completed by 2020, however a more defined timeline will be determined as the tender is awarded and vendors are engaged.
